Fort Bend County Judge KP George signs order regarding the use of Facial Protection

The following is a message form Fort Bend County Judge KP George.

"In the last seven days, cases have begun to rise exponentially. During his press conference yesterday, Governor Abbott stated that these cases began during Memorial Day weekend and they have been relentless since then. It is important to note while overall cases are increasing, the positivity rate of people tested has nearly doubled, from 4.8% of people tested getting positive results to 9%.

As of last week, when our cases of COVID-19 started skyrocketing, the Governor announced his support of local governments' abilities to require businesses to enforce face coverings for customers and employees.

I am issuing an order effective midnight tomorrow, June 25, to all commercial and retail businesses physically located in Fort Bend County to require employees and customers to wear face coverings while they are inside the business. Every business must post easily visible signage at the entrance of their business informing customers that everyone inside the store must wear a face covering.

You do not have to wear a face covering if you are outside, consuming food or drink, while in a business that requires security surveillance or screening, for example, at a bank, or if wearing a face covering poses a greater mental or physical risk to your person.

There are already many businesses that are requiring facemasks in their store, offering hand sanitizer to customers, and providing additional safety equipment and social distancing measures to keep their employees safe. Thank you to everyone who is doing their part, no matter how small. We are all in this together and if we continue doing our part, we will succeed in beating the coronavirus without the Governor of Texas forcing lockdowns or other extreme measures.

As I have always said, our decisions will be based on data, science, and input which is why we will be issuing this important health and safety measure. Thanks everyone. Together we can keep Fort Bend open for business AND keep our people safe."
